Working in Meshmixer was a great way to finalize the shape of my object. I was able to remake the water to be higher quality and see the design as a whole in a much higher quality image. It was great to be able to nail down one idea from the 10 last week. The 1 on 1 critique was a great way to see everyone else's design and receive feedback on which of my designs to move forward with, and how to improve them. I got a lot of feedback, but in the end, I had to make up my own mind. Out of my top three designs (toilet art, new technology, and walking on clouds), I had at least two people vote for each of them. When I was thinking about the feedback I received, I thought about how each one could be improved. Ironically I went with a change that was not mentioned by any of my peers. I decided to refine the toilet art mesh by adding a paintbrush as the lever. This further reinforced the original ideas I had for the design. Despite me not taking any of my peer's recommendation directly, I took much of it into consideration as I had lots of comments around adding a detail or two to each design. I liked this idea because I was happy with what I had, I just needed to add a bit more to it. I also had some feedback that it was a bit hard to tell that the paint palette was actually a paint palette. I think the high quality of Meshmixer helped with this. To solve the problem further I made the holders a bit deeper. This feedback also helped with my inspiration to add the paintbrush, since I wanted my idea to be clearer. Overall the feedback session was very helpful, I hope I was able to help everyone I spoke with as well.
Here is my finalized design. It is meant to show the juxtaposition between the beautiful and the ugly. It is also meant to show the way in which art is able to blur the lines between the concept of beautiful and ugly. It also is meant to raise questions about what art really is. Which I think Remix Culture in general does.
Remix Culture is very prevalent in today's art world. One of the examples in visual arts is "Water Fountain" by Marcel Duchamp. Ironically I feel that I remixed one of the famous pieces of remix culture. I like that example because it gets people to question originality and what our definition of art is. I believe that a toilet (or a urinal) has just as much potential to become art as a flower does.
With a society that encourages the blending of previous ideas, I feel that all art has the ability to become great art. At one point it would not have been quite so acceptable, but movies, music, and visual art have all become much more remixed, and as this becomes normal, the decisions of the artist surrounding if they remix the ideas of others just becomes one similar to "should I use watercolour or acrylic?" It is just a choice, and one of many, on the personalized journey of each artist.
After describing how my object relates to remix culture it is time to see where this object came from. Here are all the original objects from Thingiverse.
