Remix culture is becoming more and more a part of everyone's life. At one point it was reserved for music and film. Now, with the creation of the 3D printer, objects are also getting blended together and new things are created. Sometimes these objects do not have a reason for being together, other than getting people to think about those things in a new way. Sometimes the objects put together can reinforce ideas about society, or have other deeper meaning, that the viewer of the object is meant to understand. I found that this side of remix culture is very interesting and tried to add extra layers of meaning to the objects I was blending together.
"Art?"
This object started with the toilet, which I thought of being one of the ugliest objects, at least in terms of what it's for. Then flowers are associated with beauty, so I appreciated the opposition. Then I added a paint palette. Now all together these objects are meant to represent how beauty in art means different things to different people.
"New Technology"
This is a contrast of what new technology meant during the pioneer times, compared to now. (also note how the laptop is in control instead of a human).
"Bad Timing"
This clock is my take on 'time is meaningless', at least by human standards to what time is. I also like these two objects together because it lends itself to going with a line from a song: "When I die I'll be on time." (from "Cleopatra" by the Lumineers)
"Journalism"
This camera-gun is meant to represent the dangers of being an investigative journalist. I thought of these two objects going together because a journalist could sometimes feel this is what their camera is designed to do to them.
"Funeral Tool"
This is my mocking of Hollywood's idea of a cinematic funeral. Which of course is a rainy, cheerless day, where every attendee has a black umbrella.
"No Childhood"
This object was originally meant to purely be irony, between what we think of when we think of childhood and the opposite of that. I believe that a great childhood means teddy bears and bunk beds, but even more importantly freedom. I realized after putting it all together that it also reminds me that there are kids who don't get that freedom, for many reasons. That is what this came to represent for me.
"Progress"
This is another comparison of technology from different periods of history. The train fits well with the phonograph since it looks like it could be the part where smoke is released. Then I replaced the sides with more modern speakers. The train itself also came to represent the speed of which technology changes and evolves.
"Ash Tray"
This skull bowl, when mixed with the cigarette and the pipe reminded me of an anti-smoking advertisement.
"Hand Washing"
This was purely a visual pun about handwashing, that turned out to be super creepy.
"Walking on Clouds"
This final object is meant to be a visual representation of 'walking on clouds.' It shows how people can convince themselves that they are in a rainbow and sunshine place, while a storm takes place right below their feet. It's denial in shoe form.
I always like a pun I enjoyed your "Hand Washing," mash up.
